SMED Workshop in the Printing Industry
Improvement Activities Deployed
A 10 day improvement project involving a cross functional team from a leading Printing company was undertaken in the Polythene Bagging cell of the Finishing area. The Polybagging machines collate all printed materials before automatically encapsulating them in a wrapper and stacking them for ease of transportation.
Improvement activities undertaken included:-
- Operator kaizen foundations training
- Knowledge and application of SMED tool
- Asset Care and Restoration of equipment and change parts
- Development and communication of new Standardised ‘Make Ready’ procedure
Results Achieved
- 62% reduction in ‘Make Ready’ times, from 2 hours 20 minutes to 53 minutes (actual)
- Development of Action Plan for further improvement to ‘Make Ready’ process to reduce time taken to under 40 minutes
- Development of new Standardised ‘Make Ready’ procedure
- Improved Asset Care and Spare Parts management
- Improved Teamwork
