Time to let the KATA out of the bag

By |2018-06-13T11:19:37+01:00December 5th, 2014|Categories: Leadership & Kata|Tags: , |

How learning two new habits will get your improvement efforts really purring! Hi, welcome to Lean FSL’s latest blog. I’ve been talking to clients a lot recently about something called ‘kata’, and this prompted me to dust off a book I purchased about 4 years ago by Mike Rother called ‘Toyota Kata: Managing People for Improvement, Adaptiveness and Superior Results’. I’m not sure if I missed the significance of the approach the first time, but having now revisited the book I have come to realise what an excellent and important piece of work it is. I’m starting to come to the [...]

Tesco no longer lean you say? It hasn’t been for a long time..

By |2018-06-13T11:19:37+01:00October 13th, 2014|Categories: Leadership & Kata|Tags: , |

Hello again everybody, welcome to my latest blog. As they seem to be in the news almost every day at present, I thought I would pick up on the recent troubles that Tesco finds itself in. Perhaps prompted by the bad headlines, there have been a few dissenting voices regarding Tesco's reputation as a 'lean' examplar. (Check out the link to the Independent article at the end of this blog, and the Twitter comments from Bob Emiliani and others) Interestingly I have since found a link to a book on Amazon - that is still awaiting publication - that includes a [...]

In defence of the humble Value Stream Map

By |2018-06-13T11:19:38+01:00September 2nd, 2014|Categories: Value Stream Mapping|Tags: , |

Hello everybody, Welcome to the latest blog from Lean FSL Associates. I hope you all had a great Summer? The theme for this blog, is to argue the usefulness, the 'power' even of the Value Stream Map. Why do I need to jump to the defence of this lean tool in the first place you may ask? Well, it stems from a blog article I read from Bob Emiliani (the link to which is posted at the foot of this article). To those of you not familiar with the name, you should check him out. He's a Professor, an author, and [...]

Chimp or Human? Who’s solving Problems in your Organisation?

By |2018-06-13T11:19:38+01:00August 10th, 2014|Categories: Problem-solving|Tags: , , |

Hello again, Welcome to this the second blog on the Lean FSL website. I hope everybody's summers are going well? Its been great to enjoy some sunshine over the past few weeks. Those of us based in the UK are grateful for small mercies! I've recently returned from a short holiday in Scotland to take in some of the Commonwealth Games. I got the idea for this blog from my holiday reading, The Chimp Complex, by Dr Steve Peters. You may have heard of Dr Peters, he's the consultant psychiatrist to many of our British Cycling Olympians, such as Sir Chris [...]

Onshoring? Why’d you go in the first place?

By |2018-06-13T11:19:38+01:00July 14th, 2014|Categories: Leadership & Kata|

Hello, and welcome to the first of what is hopefully many blogs from me and the Associates of Lean FSL. The purpose of these blogs is to challenge some of the paradigms and ‘group think’ that exist around the subjects of lean and kaizen, and to try and get you thinking. We’re here to be challenged to, so we welcome all inputs to the debate. The lean community is incredibly generous with the sharing of knowledge, and in a small way we hope to contribute to this. As there has been a lot of media interest lately in the concept of [...]
