By |2018-06-13T11:19:36+01:00December 1st, 2015|Categories: Lean Coaching|Tags: , , , , |

Greetings of the Season to you all. It’s been a while since I last blogged, but the arrival of some colder weather in the UK and the feeling of hurtling towards the festive period with few plans in place, has spurred me into action. If I don’t commit to writing something now, then it could well be the New Year before I get chance again! I wanted to focus my discussion in this blog on the role of the Coach in our own personal Lean development. It struck me recently that I am spending more and more of my time ‘coaching’ [...]

By |2018-06-13T11:19:36+01:00July 3rd, 2015|Categories: Leadership & Kata|Tags: , , , |

Hello and welcome to part two of my blog on how Dr. Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Successful People can be translated into the behaviours associated with successful lean transformations. This blog will cover Habits 4 to 7, which focus particularly on ‘interdependence’ – effectively working with others, and ‘continuous improvement’ – which shouldn’t be much of an intellectual leap to see how this habit fits into a lean culture! So, here we go. 4. Think Win-Win. In this habit, Covey challenges the traditional, adversarial paradigm, of only being able to win, if the other party loses. He also adds [...]

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective…Lean Organisations!

By |2018-06-13T11:19:36+01:00May 5th, 2015|Categories: Leadership & Kata|

Hi everybody, Welcome to the latest Lean FSL blog. We've had a tantalising glimpse or two of Summer here in the UK over the past couple of weeks. It's always difficult to predict if these early spells of warmth are a foretaste of a long English Summer to come, or that they were the Summer! My topic for this blog (and the next one) draws from one of my favourite business self-help improvement books, 'The Seven Habits of Highly-Effective People' by Dr. Stephen Covey. I can hardly believe that this seminal work is over 25 years old; but as I was [...]

The Myth of Multi-tasking: a New Barrier to Flow

By |2018-06-13T11:19:37+01:00March 13th, 2015|Categories: Flow Tools, Leadership & Kata|Tags: , , |

Hello again everybody, and welcome to the latest blog from Lean FSL. The signs of Spring are all around us now, and it's a great time to be thinking about improvement - both as individuals and organisations. More and more of my work these days is with clients in the 'New World' of information flows and customer services. It's been a great new challenge for me personally - to test my abilities in these environments - especially as the 'product' is often an intangible piece of electronic data or a phone call. It's much easier to see barriers to flow, when [...]

Can lean thinking really be the key to ‘Making Hospitals Work’?

By |2018-06-13T11:19:37+01:00February 13th, 2015|Categories: Healthcare|Tags: , , |

Hello everybody, welcome to the latest Lean FSL blog. The Christmas break already seems a long time ago, and thoughts have undoubtedly turned to how to escape the dark and cold British winter! Another, almost perennial, occurrence during the long winter months is the news headlines regarding the latest crisis in the NHS. Yet again, a few weeks ago, we saw the media reporting that A&E departments were being over-whelmed with high demand. I - probably along with many of you - am left frustrated by a complete lack of ‘joined-up’ thinking around healthcare from our politicians, and the lack of [...]
